These are classic striped Basque tablecloths called “Donibane,” from a weaving tradition that dates back to around the Middle Ages. Weavers went door to door with their looms, quickly turning out large sturdy red, blue and green striped linen squares to protect cows from the insects.
This distinctive fabric with seven stripes represented the seven provinces of the Basque region. Nowadays the stripes can be of different widths, and a larger range of colors to compliment your table.
