First Saturday Raku

Join us at Jane’s to experience the thrilling process of Raku fired pottery! Raku is a low-temperature firing process inspired by traditional Japanese techniques. The pottery is quickly fired and removed from the kiln while still red hot and glowing. It then goes through post-fire reduction and placed in combustible materials like newspaper or saw dust which react with the glazed and unglazed areas. The results are excitingly unpredictable. Students will be given a brief history of the Raku firing technique, application of in- house glazes, and will participate in the firing process! *Registration requires students to have bisque fired pots ready to glaze (b-mix w/ grog or Raku clay is recommended). Pieces will be ready to take home the same day. Finished pots are not functional due to the firing process. There will be large amounts of heat, flames, and smoke. Long pants, cotton clothing, and closed toed shoes are required. Due to kiln size and time restraints smaller pieces are recommended. Please contact Instructor if you have more than 6 pieces or work is over 12” in height or width.
